Companion Dog Training

Training for Companionship and Competition

Group Classes

Group obedience classes are taught indoors at Bledsoe-Miller Recreation Center - indoor dog training is the only way to go!  Classes are limited to ten dogs and their owners. We're also forming a group class at Quail Creek Kennel on Saturdays. Classes form monthly, but often have a waiting list, so call early to reserve your spot.

Group obedience classes are ideal for socializing and teaching puppies and older dogs that have not had any previous obedience training.   Group classes are also excellent for distraction proofing dogs that have had prior obedience training.  The distractions and socialization opportunities that this class provide are very beneficial to teaching your dog to be obedient in different settings.

Class members will learn how to teach their dog basic obedience commands – sit, down, stand, stay, walk on a loose lead, and come when called.  Class members will also learn how to teach their dogs good manners such as not jumping on people, not rushing past people through open doors, and more!

Group Obedience Classes

There are several levels of Group Classes:

  • Beginner I - This is the first level of obedience training designed primarily for puppies and young dogs that have never had prior obedience training.  These programs focus on training your dog (and you) basic obedience commands and good canine manners.  Older dogs are also welcome in this class.  We love it when the entire family can attend these classes.
  • Beginner II - This level of obedience training is designed to improve confidence in the dog while performing obedience commands.  Heavy emphasis is placed on distraction training.  This is a pre-requisite for any higher level obedience classes through Companion Dog Training and is highly recommended for dogs training to become therapy dogs.  Classes form every other month and often have a waiting list, so call early for a space!
  • Competitive Obedience - This training level is for dogs who have completed the both Beginner classes and are looking for more of a challenge.  Students and dogs in this class are preparing to compete in AKC obedience and/or agility trials.  This level of training requires a strong commitment on the part of the owner and is offered by invitation only.  To be a member of CDT’s Competitive group you must successfully complete a Beginner II class.

Because classes are kept small there is time for lots of individual attention and for question & answer sessions.  There are no age limitations on these classes but it is required that dogs be current on their vaccinations and that puppies have completed their initial sets of vaccinations (check with your vet!).  Since it is a group setting and we train at a community center, dogs that are aggressive toward people or other dogs may require private lessons before being allowed to take group classes.  Call now for pricing and to reserve your place in the next class!
